We hunt Texas Dall sheep on high-fence ranches in Texas, where the country can range from open pasture and rolling hills to cedar, mesquite, rocky draws, and thick brush. Every ranch is a little different, and that has a lot to do with how we approach the hunt. We’ll spend our time covering country, glassing likely areas, and looking over sheep until we locate the right mature ram.

One thing we’ve learned guiding hunters in Texas is not to underestimate these sheep. A white ram might sound easy to spot, but Texas brush has a way of making an animal disappear. Once you get several rams together, the real work becomes slowing down and judging them properly. We’re not interested in rushing a hunter onto the first sheep we see. We want to find a ram worth taking.

When we’re judging a trophy Texas Dall ram, we’re looking at horn length, mass, curl, age, and overall character. Some rams carry long sweeping horns while others have tremendous mass at the bases and a tighter curl. Older rams can also pick up scars, worn horn tips, and other character that makes a trophy unique. We’ll look them over carefully and help you make the call when the right ram presents himself.
